Public awareness and positive social change is an important role
of our agency. Over the years, NSDP has organized, facilitated and
hosted numerous community initiatives, workshops and events to assess
local needs and generate awareness of important issues.
Key initiatives include:
In Spring 2010, Northern Society for Domestic Peace was approached by a local hotel owner (Bonnie Reid at the Hudson Bay Lodge) with a fundraising idea that had been done in Prince Rupert the year before:
'Mz Judged Pageant 2010'
In the spirit of the International White Ribbon Campaign where men speak out (in creative ways) against men's violence against women, Mz Judged is a satire on the beauty pageant, and all the contestants are men. Our event was held on November 13, 2010, with 19 local men participating, and the 400 seats in the Hudson Bay Lodge were sold out over 2 weeks in advance.
The wonderful men who were the contestants in our 'pageant' crossed all sectors of our community. Their ages ranged over 20 years; there were loggers, business owners, firefighters, medical professionals, counselors, newspaper reporters, etc. They each participated in the swimsuit, the evening gown, and the talent sections. Applause and Laughter raised the roof off the Hudson Bay Lodge that night, and the men say they had the time of their lives.
Funds raised from the event totalled $23,000. This included seat sales, pledges gathered by the men, calendar sales, and sales of autographed photos. For a community with a population of only about 5000 people, this is a remarkable achievement. All funds will be used to fund programs for men through Northern Society for Domestic Peace.
The event was controversial in many ways, and Northern Society for Domestic Peace welcomed the debates, the discussions, and the feedback. Thank-you to everyone who expressed their opinion!
Newspaper (Smithers Interior News) coverage included the following:
We cannot thank our supporters enough. Most of all we admire and thank the 19 local men who stepped forward to take a stand against violence against women and children.
Thank-You for your support (poster)

Community Safety Audit
In 1997, NSDP coordinated a community Safety Audit which involved
high school volunteers interviewing members of the community, local
business, and community groups to explore how safe they felt in
our community and what were the issues they thought needed to be
addressed. Not surprisingly the rural isolation was seen as an important
issue facing our residents (e.g. lack of transportation) and the
need for youth to have a safe place to go to meet and have “something
to do.“
From the Safety Audit, NSDP received support to take a closer look
at the isolation/transportation issues as it affected women, girls
and youth. The project received provincial reorganization and was
shared with several similar rural locations. The community result
was encouraging as more scheduling and a youth transit system was
implemented.

Community Response
Network
Community Response Network is a group of people and organizations
from the community who work together to coordinate, support and
provide assistance for vulnerable adults experiencing abuse and/or
self-neglect.
In 2001, our staff went international in sharing our rural perspective
in the development of response networks to senior abuse, and presented
at a conference in Cyprus Greece.
